English Lexical Borrowings in Korean Media

초록/요약

This study used text analysis of a large sample of Korean media in order to classify and analyze the English lexical borrowings found therein. The media sources were two national newspapers and the transcripts of a national radio current events talk-show, allowing for the comparison of borrowings in written and spoken data. The results showed that English borrowings are relatively rare in Korean media, but were more common in the written data than in the spoken data. The majority of borrowings had a very low diffusion rate in both media sources. It was also found that most of the borrowings across mediums belonged to the semantic domains of technology, business, and society. The vast majority of the borrowings were core borrowings which already had a Korean counterpart present in the language.
