The mediating effect of children-perceived parental involvement on the relationship between parents' participation in lifelong leaning and elementary school children's self-efficacy in Gyeonggi-do, Korea

초록/요약

The main purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between the parents’ participation in lifelong learning and their elementary school children’s self-efficacy in Gyeonggi-do, Korea. Additionally, this study focuses on a mediating effect of parental involvement on the relationship between parents’ participation in lifelong learning and their children’s self-efficacy. The target respondents of this study are an elementary school 5th and 6th grade students and one of their parents. 172 pairs of student and parent responded to the questionnaires based on previous literatures. The collected data was analyzed by SPSS 20.0. The research questions are verified by regression analysis and Sobel-test. The results of this study demonstrate that parents’ participation in non-formal and informal lifelong learning affects children’s self-efficacy. In addition, parental involvement completely and partially mediates the relationship between parents’ participation in lifelong learning and children’s self-efficacy. This study has both theoretical and practical implications. It reveals the mechanism to enhance children’s self-efficacy by parents’ participation in lifelong learning and parental involvement. Also it highlights the importance of parents’ participation in lifelong learning and parental involvement.
