Abstract Effects of lavender oil inhalation on pain and urinary symptoms in indwelling urinary catheter-removed after colorectal cancer surgery Yu, So Hyun., RN. The purpose of this study was to test the effects of aroma inhalation of lavender and linalyl acetate on pain relief and urinary symptoms of indwelling urinary catheter-removed patients after a colorectal cancer surgery. This study was designed as a randomized control group experimental study on a basis of before and after the intervention, resulting in a total of 66 subjects recruited. Each of control group, lavender (1% lavender) group and LA (1% linalyl acetate) group was given inhalation for 20 minutes. Measurements before inhalation and after inhalation by using VAS (visual analog scale) were made with respect to pain magnitude, systolic BP, diastolic BP, heart rate, lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and quality of life (QoL) satisfaction involving urinary symptoms. Whereas no significant difference across three groups was found in terms of systolic BP, diastolic BP, heart rate, LUTS and QoL satisfaction involving urinary symptoms, significant difference across three groups resulting from inhalation of lavender and linalyl acetate was found in terms of pain and urinary residual sense among LUTS; in particular, the intergroup comparison reveals statistically significant difference in the LA group compared with the control group and the lavender group. The result suggests that inhalation of linalyl acetate is an effective nursing intervention to relieve pain and urinary residual sense of indwelling urinary catheter-removed patients following colorectal cancer surgery.
