This study was carried out to investigate site and soil factors affecting growth of root collar diameter (RCD) and height (HT) of Larix kaempferi trees. The main purpose of this study were 1) to investigate soil properties in L. kaempferi plantations, 2) to measure annual relative growth rate (RGR) of RCD and HT of L. kaempferi trees, and 3) to find site and soil factors affecting growth of RCD and HT of L. kaempferi trees. 2-year-old bare-root seedlings of L. kaempferi were planted in Chuncheon, Gapyeong, Gimcheon, Inje, Wonju, and Yeongju sites, establishing with three plots (400m2 per plot) within each site. Five soil samples per plot were collected to the depth of 20 cm in October 2010 and 2013. Total nitrogen (TN), available phosphorus (avail. P), and organic matter (OM) showed significantly positive relationships with stand age. Soil pH and avail. P were significantly increased and decreased 3 years after planting, respectively. Annual RGR of RCD and HT in the Yeongju site were significantly lower than those in the other sites. It is related to the fact that TN and OM concentrations in the Yeongju site were relatively lower than those in the other sites. From results of estimated growth equations made by using site and soil factors, RCD was affected by elevation, sand proportion, avail. P, and available soil depth. The estimated RCD equation was RCD (mm) = 14.465 – 0.009․elevation – 0.265․sand proportion in soil + 0.557․avail. P + 0.907․available soil depth and the coefficient of determination was 0.40. HT was mainly affected by slope, avail. P, and available soil depth. The estimated HT equation was HT (cm) = 71.669 – 3.364․slope + 7.541․avail. P + 5.108․available soil depth and the coefficient of determination was 0.42. Growth of RCD and HT was commonly affected by avail. P and available soil depth. Therefore, plantation sites of L. kaempferi should be considered the specific soil functions – available soil depth and avail. P concentration – in order keep higher survival rates with better growth condition based on the current study. Additionally, L. kaempferi trees will grow better within the soil environment composing lower sand proportion at plantation sites. Results from this study could be practically useful for determining suitable plantation sites of L. kaempferi.
