Spectral analysis for characterizing electroencephalographic oscillations in cognitive processes

Electroencephalographic (EEG) signals contain a variety of oscillatory rhythms. Detailed analysis of these rhythms can provide valuable evidence that may help to elucidate the neural mechanisms underlying many human cognitive processes, as most of these processes are based on neural circuits in the cerebral cortex, which cause modulation of EEG oscillatory rhythms. This thesis aims to demonstrate the fundamental mechanism underlying three high-level cognitive processes, viz., emotion regulation, facial preference, and recognition memory, for which the relationship of EEG oscillatory rhythms with the relevant process is not yet fully understood. To this end, I examined the temporal and spatial changes in frequency-specific characteristics of EEG oscillatory rhythms by using spectral analysis that can characterize not only the amount of local activity, but also the degree of large-scale neural communication, quantitatively. In the first part of the study, I examined how three types of cognitive reappraisal goals, i.e., decrease, maintain, and increase conditions, might influence the significance of an upcoming emotional stimulus, and how it might modulate the induced EEG oscillations. Spectral analysis using complex wavelet transform revealed that these regulatory goals mainly modulated the left frontal gamma power (decrease < maintain < increase). In particular, the active cognitive reappraisal goals, i.e., a decrease and increase conditions, produced greater large-scale gamma-phase synchronization compared to the neutral condition. These effects might be caused by the reflection of conscious awareness of emotional states on the induced gamma oscillations. In the second part of the study, I describe the effect of facial preference on the modulation of alpha oscillations during two facial preferences tasks, consisting of a passive viewing task and an active choice task. In this study, significant differences in oscillatory power between the preferred and non-preferred face groups were only observed in the alpha oscillations. In addition, left frontal lateralization in alpha power occurred in the passive viewing task, while the posterior regions played an important role in facial preferences during the active choice task. These results demonstrated that the modulation of alpha activity by facial preference is a top-down process, which requires more cognitive resources to facilitate information processing of the preferred faces that capture more visual attention than non-preferred faces. In the third part of the study, I investigated theta phase synchronization while subjects recognized old items compared to when they correctly identified new items. Specifically, the retrieval of recognition memory task led to higher theta phase synchronization between the right frontal and left parietal regions. These results support the role of theta phase synchronization between the posterior and frontal cortices in recognition memory. The findings reported here demonstrated the critical role of EEG oscillatory rhythms in human cognitive process in the cortex. It seems that a specific cognitive process depends on a specific brain oscillatory rhythm. Moreover, the study demonstrates the temporal and spatial characteristics of the relevant neural oscillations, shedding new light on human cognitive processing in the cortex.
