Efficacy of Integrating TV News in Teaching Collocations based on the Dual Language Model

초록/요약

This study investigates the efficacy of using the integrated-skills and dual language model approach with authentic TV broadcast news in teaching collocations. The research questions looked into what extent the teaching method was effective in boosting the acquisition of collocations as well as how it varied among two groups of students with differing levels of proficiency. The participants were 110 university students who were divided into experimental (n=61) and control groups (n=49). Over a period of two months, the former was taught intensively with a set of handouts made from news scripts including exercises aimed at boosting their productive skills. The control group was given just the traditional listening comprehension instructions such as filling in the gap dictations. A pre-test and post-test were used to measure the improvements in the acquisition of collocations and a questionnaire survey was conducted to observe how the teaching method was received by the students. Based on the pre-test scores, each of the experimental and control groups was divided into below-mean and above-mean score groups referred to as low level and high level groups. The general data was analyzed using a paired t-test, two-sample t-test and ANOVA. The analysis showed that the experimental group as a whole far outperformed the control group and the analysis was statistically significant. Also the low level group was found to have benefited more from the teaching method. The results of the study suggest that explicit teaching and the holistic, or integrated approach based on the dual language model, or in this case L1, Korean to L2, English translation, seems to have been valid and has important implications for further pedagogical research in the future.
