Tribological properties of carbon steel brake discs affected by microstructure and disc temperature

초록/요약

The tribological properties of carbon steel discs was studied using a 1/5 scale dynamometer. Carbon steel discs were tempered on various temperatures (400, 500, 600 and 700 ℃) to make different microstructure respectively. After tempering, microstructure morphology, hardness and thermal diffusivity were investigated. In the low temperature friction tests (IBT 70 ℃), friction coefficient increased and surface temperature also increased during brake procedure. On the other hand, in the high temperature friction tests (IBT 470 ℃), friction coefficient decreased as disc temperature increased on discs which had a low thermal diffusivity. In case of friction levels, microstructure change of disc during friction test caused unstable contact surface which is an important factor for friction levels.
