초록/요약
Since the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis, regionalism has continued to grow rapidly in East Asia. Various economic and financial cooperation frameworks were established during and after the crisis, which in turn, provided an opportunity for China and Japan to strengthen their regional influences. Pursuing the regional leadership, both China and Japan have been actively participating in regional affairs. By proposing initiatives of forming regional integration institutions, their leadership competition plays a significant role in the process of East Asian economic integration. However, China and Japan applied distinct approaches achieving the regional leadership, which could be seen from their diplomatic policies in both the political and economic fields. Compared to China’s strategy of establishing bilateral free trade agreement with other regional nation-states, Japan has been emphasizing on its “value diplomacy,” which proposes to create a close relationship with nation-countries possessing similar political values. By far, China and Japan’s leadership competition has greatly fostered the process of regional economic integration in East Asia. Nevertheless, their rival relationship also inevitably impedes the further development of regional integration due to their disagreement on regional affairs and the conclusion of the on-going economic cooperation negotiation, such as CJK-FTA and RCEP. Hence, with other main regional powers, Korea and ASEAN are considered to possess valuable potentials that could play an intermediate role in their animosity.
