제2언어(L2) 환경에서 영문학 작품 활용에 관한 연구 분석과 제안

The purpose of the study was to examine the existing research on the use of English literature in L2 settings and make suggestions for future research. Educational effects of using English literary works were analyzed in terms of linguistic, cultural, cognitive, affective, and classroom environment aspects. Pedagogical implications and problems of the existing research were discussed as well. The results of the study are as follows. In terms of genre, language learner literature was used the most in L2 settings. This trend will continue for a while as the learner-centered approach is encouraged in current educational circumstances. Regarding the educational effects of using English literature, there are lots of studies showing the improvement in English abilities. Using English literature was also effective in increasing interest and motivation in learning English. Some problems were revealed in the existing research. More than half of the studies were carried out targeting only adult learners. Long-term research was insufficient, and there was a need for diversification of research methods. Learner variables should be considered for systematic instructional design. Educational effects of the previous studies have not been described in detail. There was a lack of an attempt to combine contents of literary works with language items. There were not many studies using poems and dramas compared to using novels and language learner literature. Using instructional media including computers, the Internet, and audio books should be more considered in the future research. Proposals for the future research are as follows. First, more research in primary and secondary school settings should be conducted. Second, giving learners a wider range of choices in selecting literary texts is needed. Third, studies should be conducted on a long term basis. Fourth, systematic teaching methodology which connects contents of literature to linguistic aims should be developed. Finally, more instructional media such as films, computers, and the Internet should be used in learning literature in L2 settings.
