A Semiotic Approach to the Spatial Signification of Shanghai Shikumen Longtang

This paper uses the basic principle of modern semiotics as a tool to analyze Shanghai Shikumen Longtang, which is a unique residential architectural form in Shanghai, China. The spatial structural system of Shanghai Shikumen Longtang is a sign system based on the architectural semiotics. This paper focuses on the structure of the architectural space, including an interactive relationship between the architectural spatial structure and the residents. The main research part of this paper is to deliver the theoretical study of modern architectural semiotics through the syntactic and the semantic analysis of the spatial structure of Shanghai Shikumen Longtang. Thus, this study examines the pragmatics of meaning in production and reproduction in Shanghai Shikumen Longtang. This paper aims to demonstrate the spatial language grammar, meaning of the sign system of the architectural spatial structure and pragmatic communication of Shanghai Shikumen Longtang, decode the profound and intricate signification in the spatial system of Shanghai Shikumen Longtang. The semiotic approach to the spatial structural recognition of Shanghai Shikumen Longtang explores a deeper and broader field to recognize the underlying meaning system of the Longtang in urban space of modern Shanghai City.
