초록/요약
The purpose of the current study was to examine the multiple mediated effects of emotional clarification and emotional expression belief in the relationship between two emotion regulation strategies (i.e., reappraisal and suppression) and psychological wellbeing. In addition, this study investigated differences of these relations across two groups, undergraduate students and high school students. Participants included a total of 460 including 215 undergraduate students (mean age = 22.14 years, SD = 1.95; 38.1% male, 60.9% female) and 345 high school students (mean age = 16.38 years, SD = .64; 33.3% male, 66.1% female). Participants completed the self-reported measures of emotion regulation (Emotion Regulation Questionnaire; Gross & John, 2003), emotional clarification (Trait Meta-Mood scale; Salovey, Mayer, Goldman, Turvey, & Palfai, 1995), emotional expression belief (Belief about Emotional Expression; Choi & Min, 2005), and psychological wellbeing (Psychological Well-being Scale; Ryff , 1989). The SPSS 18.0 and AMOS 18.0 were used to analysis data. The summary of the result was as follows. The research model was tested and indicated acceptable fit indices such as TLI, CFI, and RMSEA. First of all, the model of emotion regulation and psychological wellbeing indicated that the two aspects of emotion regulation (i.e., reappraisal and suppression) significantly affected on the emotional clarification and emotional expression belief respectively. The reappraisal variable positively affected on the emotional clarification and negatively affected on emotional expression belief. On the other hand, the suppression variable negatively affected on the emotional clarification and positively effected on emotional expression belief. Furthermore, psychological wellbeing was positively affected by emotional clarification and negatively affected by emotional expression belief. Second, the analysis of mediator effects of the research model revealed the reappraisal variable had a positive effect on psychological wellbeing through emotional clarification and emotional expression belief. Additionally, the direct effect of reappraisal on the psychological wellbeing was significantly positive. In contract, suppression variable had a negative effect on the psychological wellbeing through emotional clarification and emotional expression belief. The impact of suppression on psychological wellbeing was not significant. Third, the result of multi-group analysis showed that there are equivalent patterns between groups, undergraduate students and high school students. However, the size of the estimated path coefficients of structural model was relatively different. The path from reappraisal to psychological wellbeing and the path from reappraisal to emotional clarification had relatively large coefficient in high school students. This result showed that reappraisal modifying situations cognitively had stronger impact on emotional clarification and psychological well-being in high school students than their counterpart, college students. This study identified individual internal variables which affect psychological wellbeing by the strategies of emotion regulation. The results of this research also specified how emotional expression belief and emotional clarification are related to psychological wellbeing by examining the roles of emotion regulation strategies. It implies that it is necessary to consider emotional expression belief and emotional clarification which are related to emotion regulation so as to improve client’s psychological wellbeing in counseling by understanding those mechanisms. Furthermore, those findings implied that the flexibility of emotion regulation strategies is an essential factor to enhance psychological wellbeing.
