ECOTOURISM IN UGANDA : A POLICY DIMENSION FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

초록/요약

The world today is going green in all aspects of life. Technology is becoming green and so is travel. Travel is green in a sense that travelers are now interested in preserving environments where they travel, contributing to well beings of communities staying in tourist destinations while enjoying the benefits of interacting with nature and the cultures of the local people. Although Uganda has a variety of natural and cultural resources and promoting and selling these resources as eco, the bulk of what the country sells is in actual sense nature based tourism which if often confused with ecotourism by many tourism practitioners in the country. It is therefore essential for the country to develop an ecotourism strategic plan to guide all ecotourism developments in the country. Proper planning and implementation of the plan will undoubtedly catalyze the development and wealth creation agenda of the country through enabling Uganda transform from a peasant and agro-based economy to a middle income and prosperous country. The social and economic benefits of tourism will be more wide spread enabling the people in return to conserve and preserve the tourism resources from which they derive a living. More jobs will be created and people's standards of living will improve. The challenge however is to effectively implement the plan as many plans have failed due to inefficient monitoring and implementation mechanisms. The proposed plan highlighted in this study shows areas that need intervention for ecotourism to triumph among which include establishing and developing model ecotourism sites, training and awareness of ecotourism, establishing the ecotourism fund, marketing and promoting the country as an ecotourism destination, among others.
