Mental Health Risk Management in Japanese and Korean Elementary Schools

The purposes of this research are1)to clarify differences and similarities between mental health risk managements in Korean and Japanese elementary schools and 2) to consider ways to improve that in both. This research analyzes the differences and similarities between Japanese and Korean mental health risk management systems in school focusing on values and activities of Yogo teachers in Japan and Bogeon teachers in Korea. For this purpose, this study has examined educational systems and policies related to mental health risk management both in Japan and Korea and then analyzed the differences and similarities between Japanese and Korean values and activities related to mental health risk management by conducting an interview and survey research with teachers, Yogo teachers, and Bogeon teachers working in elementary school. Results show the similarities of their duties or values regarding mental health risk management and suicide prevention, the differences of their limitation they are feeling, and the importance of measures to compensate for the limitation such as activities which can involve parents or families of students and multiple-assignment of Yogo teachers and Bogeon teachers.
