초록/요약

Using nationally representative data from the Korean Education & Employment Panel (KEEP), this study investigates the parents-children communication differential by family background, and the effects of parents-children communication style on academic achievement in relationship with the parents' educational expectation, teacher-student relationship, and self-efficacy. The SEM(Structural Equation Modeling) results showed that the higher the parents’ SES level, the higher the level of open family communication style. In addition, the open family communication style had a direct effect on academic achievement. Furthermore, the bootstrapping test showed that the open family communication style and teacher-student relationship were significant mediators of the effect of parents‘ SES on academic achievement. This finding suggests that parents-children communication style exists in a different form for parents‘ SES, and this can lead to an achievement gap between classes. From this finding, several policy measures proposed to mitigate the gap between youths’ achievement.
