Tragedy and Postcolonial Resistance

초록/요약

An English literature writer and professor, Chinua Achebe alive can be said to be a pioneer of postcolonial literature in 1960s. In his works he shows the culture, relationship, and trouble between Nigerian and western people as they are. Under the colonial government system by England, the heros of Achebe's trilogy Things Fall Apart, No Longer at Ease, and Arrow of God commonly go through mental and material changes on the border between their tradition and the western culture. As a result, they get to tragic results at the end of the novels. When focusing on the ending, we can find that the author depicts the story as tragic. But presenting three different endings of characters in his novel, he presents us real postcolonial resistance against the imperial ideology and colonial discourse. It is important that the author presents a kind of guideline to reach a real postcolonial situation and for Nigerians even to the people from so called ‘the third world’ to be independent. To support this argument, this thesis examines the ways that the African and the western people differently describe the characters. And by looking into his three texts, we can reach the conclusion that both the causes and the resolutions of the conflict and tragic he shows can be found in the various kinds of writings including his works, and open minded communications among people. Though the worlds Achebe depicts in his texts are tragic, we can finally get the ideas to reach the real postcolonial world by examining his texts thoroughly and considerately.
