초록/요약
In Korea, language discourse production in regular English classes has been overlooked. In consequence, EFL learners in Korea have much difficulty in producing native-like discourse even after years of receiving formal English education. This paper was designed to investigate whether or not Korean high school EFL learners’ ability to produce cohesive written narrative discourse is related to their English proficiency measured by PCSAT scores. The research was also conducted to determine predictability of cohesive discourse in explaining Korean EFL learners’ language competency. References and conjunctions were used to measure the cohesiveness of a written discourse. The test results proved that the quantity of references and subordinating conjunctions per clause has positive correlations with language competency. Among these two variables, the correct use of references had the biggest influence on predicting the PCSAT scores, while the use of coordinating conjunctions, such as ‘and,’ did not play an important role, even though it appeared a great number of times throughout the written discourse. In addition, there were significant mean differences between a group of above and below average students in producing and handling references and conjunctions in their narratives. Speculations are made to account for these findings.
