초록/요약
Regarding Elizabeth Bishop as only a female poet, critics have made many remarks about her reticence which has led to a great underestimation of her poetry. In addition, they have also pointed out that Bishop's poems do not achieve any organic unity. This thesis examines Elizabeth Bishop's own poetic field throughout her writing career, paying close attention to her observation which alludes to her desire to connect with the world, her readers and her own self which gives evidence to the organic unity of her work. By focusing on Bishop's poems dealt with several different kinds of water metaphors such as the sea, river and tears, this study explores how this indirect rhetoric can be one of the devices that Bishop uses to form her own poetic characteristics. First of all, Bishop depicts the sea or river as a place to observe other creatures in the surrounding landscape. In her poems, poetic speakers try to communicate with other objects through the eye which shows Bishop's interest in allowing these speakers to see the world and nature in a new light. Through this precise observation, the speakers find out something that they never realized before. In addition, Bishop uses the sea or river as a symbol to express certain meanings instead of directly stating them. Bishop uses the image of water in her poems to symbolize the communication with the text in order to uncover its deeper meanings. Moreover, Bishop also finds her own sense of identity through the river in her poetry connecting her own past and present. Bishop's poetic language suggests her deeper desire to engage with the world, readers and ultimately results in her ardent wish to find out who she is.
