In order to meet the stringent effluent limitation guideline, alternative add-on treatment process for the secondary effluent from sewage treatment plant has been investigated. Since the secondary effluent characterized as an oligotrophic condition, a synthetic wastewater simulated the secondary effluent has been used as a substrate for the two laboratory biofilm reactors with plate-type and moving media biofilm reactor. Experimental results indicated that organic were removed appreciably while nitorgen and phosphorus was not sufficiently eliminated. However, biofilm reactors with moving media showed a nitrification. It has been noticed that extracellular polymeric substance content in various biofilm were similar although extract time were varied with type of biofilm. Comparison of various treatment effluent processes indicated that the filtration was an effective in removal of solids as well as organics.
