Basic Study on Selection of Wild Plant Species

초록/요약

The space of a school is everywhere we are living, which is the place having a close relation with our life, and since long time ago, a school is a space of communication between the people in the district; at the position of children, a school is a space where they spent most of their time. Recently, at a pan-national level, every agency is putting forth environment-friendly policies while carrying the banner for "Low Carbon Green Growth" as their keynote of policies. Particularly, the development project for environment-friendly school playground, which is being implemented for elementary, junior & senior high schools, has become a center of interest and controversy as hot as school parents' enthusiasm about education. This research is aimed at suggesting the possibility of playground greening plan using wild herbal plants as a third alternative, which breaks the mould of common sense, and could offer a lot more options to school authorities with the examination of playground development at diverse angles accompanied by school conditions through the analysis of merits and demerits and problems of the existing bare playground, playground with lawn, and playground with artificial turf. As a result of examining the playground of 10 close-down schools located in Gyeonggi-do, there were wild plants belonging to a total of 35 famiies and 115 species growing; as a result of examining the green belts in three districts including the riverfront in the Han river, there were wild plants belonging to a total of 22 families and 68 species growing, while wild plants belonging to a total of 31 families and 95 species were identified to grow in three areas near Bukhansan National Park including hiking trails, and round trail. The weeds, which had the most frequency of emergence at the survey area, were in the order of 18 species of poaceae, 14 species of ironweed, 11 species of Polygonaceae, 9 species of Cyperaceae, and 4 species of Caryophyllaceae. There were wild plants having a lot of characteristics suited for greening of school playgrounds, such as a foxtail, a Korean lettuce, Eragrostis ferrunginea, Erigeron annuus, Elymus tsukushiensis, Amaranthus lividus, Plantago camtschatica, Oxalis comiculata, Draba nemorosea var. hebecarpa, Cyperus nipponicus, Capsella bursapastoris, Dayflower, Echinochloa crus-galli, Euphorbia humifusa, Youngia japonica, short awn, Polygonum aviculare, Erigeron canadensis, Mongolian dandelion, Digitaria violascens, Arenarua serpyllifolia, Trifolium pratense, Dandelion, Hydrocotyle maritima, Mollugo pentaphylla, Poa annua, Portulaca oleracea, mugwort, Ixerus denbtata, Plantago major var. japonica, Cirsium japonicum var. ussurience, Euphorbia supina, lawn grass, Asian plantain, violet, clover, Poa sphondylodes, and poor man's pepper. This research is going to suggest an efficient development plan for greening playground with wild plants, through which it was confirmed that dust scattering can be prevented while offering ecological inhabiting environment, reducing environmental pollution, reducing a lot more maintenance costs than grass development economically, and creating a higher value than a bare playground both aesthetically and landscape efficiency. Thus, it is significant in that together with the diverse use of school space, the greening of school playgrounds using wild plants as a part of creation of ecological environment and ecological education can contribute to the creation of conditions for environmental friendliness.
