THE IMPACTS OF FDI IN MINERAL DEVELOPMENT IN MONGOLIA

Mongolia is one of the ten leading countries in the world rich in natural resources. Mongolia has substantial world-class mineral deposits currently counting to 1170 deposits and over 8,000 mineral occurrences of 80 different minerals plus immense quantities of untapped mineral resources, and is said to have the potential to be one of the world's fastest growing economies over the next decade, as well as an investment target for global mining giants. Mineral products accounted for 28.2% of GDP, 56.3% of FDI and 55% of total Mongolian exports. In 2008, about 75% of Mongolia's total export revenue was derived from mineral commodities of which copper accounted for 33%, gold 24%, coal 7%, petroleum 4% and zinc 6%. At the moment, Mongolia is at another crucial time of its development history. Its near future position between the factor-driven or efficiency-driven economy will now depend on the wisdom, effective and timely implementation of the Government policy. Although minerals have the potential to significantly contribute to economic growth, the Government policy for wise and efficient management of the mineral wealth will ultimately determine whether this potential is realized. In my research work comprised of five chapters, I seek to review the mineral development in Mongolia and come up with recommendations as to the best possible ways to benefit to the highest extent from the current and coming explosive economy growth based on the mining sector.
