초록/요약
The mining and mineral industries face many difficulties in achieving sustainability. To secure its continued operations, the industry must respond to these challenges. The leading companies in mining and mineral sectors have already started responding to some of the sustainability challenges, as demonstrated by Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development (MMSD) and the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). To delve deeper into the sustainability issue, this paper will discuss mine closures which hugely impact the environment as well as society. Based on the successful mine closure of BHP Billiton, the future direction of mine closure will be discussed in the paper. Even though many different issues face every mine, it is possible to develop a number of principles to support mine closure planning for the benefit of all.
