(Paleopathological study on mummies of General Hakbong and his wife)

초록/요약

In Korea, a mummy is rarely found, because no mummy has been made artificially. All the mummies found were made naturally. The majority of them were found in the graves of the Joseon Dynasty with special barrier of lime-soil mixture. Real number of mummies is more than officially reported, because considering the Korean culture; most of the human remains are re-buried or cremated by their descendants. The opportunity for scientific study or research on Korean mummies is very rare. In May, 2004, a mummified couple was discovered in a double lime-soil mixture barriered grave during a family grave relocation in Daejeon. This grave was made during the Joseon Dynasty approximately 600 years ago. In this study, the mummies were examined and analyzed without damage, or with the least amount of damage possible, using a paleopathological approaches to determine the order of burial, cause of death, illnesses during life, age at time of death, and differences in preservation state. Based on these studies, the mummies were determined to be 40 (male) and 50 (female) years old at the time of death. Clonorchis sinensis was found in both mummies. The male was presumed to have died from pulmonary disorders, and the female from leptospirosis. The male mummy had died first and the female was buried with him after she died. In this study, we introduced the scientific methods to study mummies with the results briefly, and discussed the future direction and obstacles of mummy research in Korea. Key words: Korean mummified couple, paleopathology, Joseon Dynasty, lime-soil mixture barrier grave
