Abstract The Effects of The Self-Exercise Program on Balance & Gait in patients with Hemiplegia Sung Gyu, Shin Department of Exercise Science Graduate School of Bio-Medical ScienceKOREA University The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of the self-exercise related to the balance & gait after stroke. The twenty-six patients with hemiplegia were recruited at Bobath Memorial Hospital in Bundang. They were randomly divided into the control and experimental group. The Pre-test(10m Walk Test, Timed Up & Go Test, MTD Test) was impelmented to two groups before this study. The general physical therapy(NDT & Gait training) with the Self-Exercise Program(It consists of nine movements for improvement of the balance & gait in patients with hemiplegia) were performed to the experimental group more than five times per week during four week training period and the control group took only the general physical therapy(NDT & Gait training). The Post-test(10m Walk Test, Timed Up & Go Test, MTD Test) were assessed after 4weeks. Data were analyzed on intention-to treat bias using SPSS Ver. 12.0 K. and the independent sample t-test was assessed in order to verify the same nature of two groups. And the comparisons between two groups were determined using paired samples t-test before/after this study, the independent sample t-test was performed for the comparisons of the changes of the differences between groups before/after this study. The results of this study were following ; After a 4-week training period, the mean time of TUG(Timed Up & Go) was significantly decreased by 5.10sec. in the experimental group and also declined by 1.84sec. in the control group significantly. After a 4-week training period, the experimental group was significantly declined by 4.46% in CoroVO<table 2.> of the subsection of MTD(Balance Measurement and Training Dynamic Workstation : MTD Balance, MTD system, Germany) and the control group was also decreased by 5.70% significantly. CoroVX has fallen 5.70& in the experimental group and 1.61% in the control group significantly. After a 4-week training period, WeightL was increased by 5.69% in the experimental group and 2.31% in the control group, but not significant. After a 4-week training period, WeightR<table 2.> was increased by 3.92% in the experimental group and 3.85% in the control group, but not significant. After a 4-week training period, Squatting<table 2.> was decreased by 3.31% in the experimental group and 1.84% in the control group, but not significant. After a 4-week training period, Situp<table 2.> was significantly decreased by 2.61% in the experimental group and 0.84% in the control group. After a 4-week training period, SagitL<table 2.> was significantly decreased by 4.31% in the experimental group and 1.54% in the control group. After a 4-week training period, SagitaF<table 2.> was decreased by 2.85% in the experimental group and 0.61% in the control group, but not significant. The results of this study showed that the experimental group who took the Self-Exercise Program was significant compared with the control group with only general physical therapy. This means that the Self-Exercise Program improved the balance & gait in the experimental group and it was significant compared with the control group. There were limitations that we couldn't departmentalize the characters(nature) of the patients and the period was too short in oder to make the generalization to every patients with hemiplegia. But the Self-Exercise helps the patients with hemiplegia improve the balance & gait so that there will be needed further studies base on this study.
