The Role of Technological Development in the Korean Economy

South Korea's main economy in 1945 was agriculture. In the following decade, South Korea shifted its agricultural economy to light industry, consumer products and heavy industry. In 1988, by hosting Summer Olympics, its economy boosted. In contrast, 2002 World Cup also brought many opportunities in terms of economic development. At the beginning of 21st century, South Korea became one of the leaders in the IT sector with aids and support by its government. Leading companies such as Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics became the main export providers of semiconductors along with various IT products. Historically, Korea did not get any positive attention until 1970s and 1980s when Korea achieved fast economic growth. Previous economy in Korea was depended on mostly in agriculture, steel, and heavy industry. However, there has been dramatic change over time, not only in the standard of living and the shift of main industry, but also in the level of technology development and capacity to spread to all over the world as a front runner of technological development. So, objective of this research is to see role of technological development in Korea and to find out how this technological development affected in terms of Korea’s economic growth. Also, this research oversees the problems and issues on technological development in Korea then propose solutions to them. Finally, suggest possible propositions to improve its technological development and economy for future.
