Abstract Secular trend of mortality rate and injury burden of transport accidents, suicides and falls Kisook Kim Department of Epidemiology and Health Informatics Graduate school of Korea University (supervising Professor: Soonduck Kim, M.D., M.P.H., Ph.D.) Objectives: Recently injury has become a major world-wide health problem. But studies in Korea about injuries were very few. Traffic accidents, suicides and falls of injuries are major cause of premature mortality. These have become the social and economic burden. Thus, this study was conducted to analysis the trend of major injuries from 1991 to 2006 and to provide basic data to prevent injuries. Methods: This study was base on the National Statisfical Office data from 1991 to 2006 and calculated to estimate the burden of major injury by using the SEYLL(standard expected years of life lost)and total lost earnings equation. Results: Mortality, standard expected years of life lost and total lost earnings of transport accidents was increased from 1991 to 1996. But that was decreased from 2000 to 2006. Mortality, standard expected years of life lost and total lost earnings of suicides was increased as time went on. Falls was included in ten leading causes of death from 2003. In case of man of falls, mortality, standard expected years of life lost and total lost earnings was decreased in 2006 than 2003. In case of women of falls was not included in ten leading of death in 2006 but, that was increasaed value of mortality, standard expected years of life lost and total lost earnings than 2003. conclusions: This study was showed that injury has major social and economical losses. These results could contribute to establishing strategies for injury prevention. we could reduce injury related premature death through active interest in injury prevention program. key words: transport accidents, suicides, falls, SEYLL, total lost earnings
