POLICY DEVELOPMENT ON IMPROVING HOUSING PROVISION OF ULAANBAATAR CITY, MONGOLIA

초록/요약

About 60% of the Mongolian’s population is classified as urban and more than half of this urban population lives in the capital Ulaanbaatar. After former Soviet Union in 1990 and following economic and political liberalization, the urban population has increased steadily. During the nineties severe winter killed millions of livestock, and this, coupled with the collapse of agriculture subsidies, led to a sharp economic decline and an increase in unemployment. Since then Ulaanbaatar has received a considerable number of immigrants from all over the country. According to official figures the city has grown by more than 50% from 555,2 thousand in 1990 to approximately 1025,1 thousand registered people in 2007. The unofficial population is thought to be closer to 1,2 million as there are at least 200,0 thousand unregistered inhabitants, living mainly in the ger areas.
