The result and surgical consideration of chronic suppurative otitis media with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)

Background and Objectives: To evaluate the effect of methicilin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection on the surgical outcome of chronic otitis media (COM), we compared the surgical outcome of MRSA-isolated patients with those of patients not infected by MRSA. Materials & Methods: One hundred and thirty COM patients operated by the same surgeon from March 2004 to September 2008 were reviewed. Among them, we analyzed the patients operated by using canal wall-up procedures retrospectively, including 34 patients of MRSA group and 96 patients of control group, to study the incidence of post-operative complication and revision operation, tympanic membrane graft success rate, and the degree of hearing improvement. Results: There was no significant difference of the degree of hearing improvement and TM graft success rate in MRSA and control groups. However, post-operative complication and revision operations were higher in MRSA group as 8.8% vs. 2.1% and 8.8% vs. 3.1% than the control respectively, and total rate was significantly higher than control group. Conclusion: The MRSA-group showed higher incidence of post-operative complications and revision operation compared to the control-group, even though there was no difference in the results of hearing improvement and the TM graft success rate.
