Today’s business environment is under intense global competition and rapid changes in technologies. Companies operating in this environment are challenged by consumers to rapidly develop wider product lines, yet are still low priced. To maintain complexity in all levels of business field, many companies seek collaborative relationship with other companies. Hence, from agriculture to industry, from software to clothing, the spread of strategic alliances is quickening. A strategic Alliance is a business strategy in which two or more companies unite for common goals of mutual agreement, so business benefits and control power should be shared by them through cooperative partnership in more than one strategic field. Recently, not only company-based alliances, but also international strategic alliances in group including more than 3 companies have increased as well, which share fundamental concepts with bilateral alliances. However, multilateral alliances also show remarkable discrepancy from traditional company-based alliance competition due to their more complicated structure. Knowing that, this research will study the characteristics, motivations, varieties, and current situation of strategic alliances with empirical cases. At the end, this study will conclude with defining key determinants of successful strategic alliances in today’s international business with suggestions for companies that consider aligning or that are already conducting strategic alliance.
