초록/요약
Since the establishment of the Republic after the World War II, Korea has been supporting trade liberalization based on WTO?fs multilateralism until recently. However, since more and more regional trading blocs arose during the last stage of the Uruguay Round in the early 1990s, Korea started studies regarding regionalism as an alternative. As the first partner of a FTA, Korea picked out Chile. At this juncture, the paper suggests a Korea?]US FTA should be now realized to be a strategic choice for these two countries. To verify this, the paper analyzes feasibility and potential benefits of a Korea?]US FTA as well as trade conflicts between two countries. Main findings of this study are as the following. First, the most immediate and positive effect of a Korea?]US FTA is increasing bilateral trade and mitigating negative effect cursed by recent trade concerns. Second, to initiate and accelerate talks for a Korea?]US FTA, Bilateral Investment Agreement should be successfully concluded. Third, Korea has to take its strategic position by taking measures to minimize possible costs for a Korea?]U.S. FTA.
