Background: Even though recent digital cameras have powerful macro capability, flashed macro photographs are not always satisfactory. Light emitting diode (LED), a kind of semiconductor product, has many advantages such as low electricity consumption, minimal heat dissipation, resistance to hit, prompt on-and-off, compact size and durability. Adjoining the leading technologies of digital camera and LED would improve the image quality of dermatological conditions or diseases. In 'micro-studio', the tiny space comprised of the objective, digital camera, and illuminator, user can modify or replace the LED lights of illuminator for more representative and efficient images. Objective: The aim of this study was to develop LED illuminators for digital photography suitable for investigating the skin, and enhance the methods to understand the digital skin images especially in colorimetric ways. Methods: We devised LED illuminators of several different light characteristics to acquire various super-macro digital images. The reference CIELAB values of color chart recorded with spectrophotometer were compared statistically with computed CIELAB values from digital images obtained using LED illuminator in order to find equations for real CIELAB values. To confirm the dermatological usability and diagnostic value, we applied the LED illuminators and digital camera on the common dermatological conditions such as acne, pigmentary change and erythema, etc. Results: The images obtained with LED illuminator were more reproducible. Regression analysis using simple linear regression model made the conversion equations that can predict the real CIELAB values. For the colorimetric purpose, manual mode images obtained with LED illuminator were preferable. It was possible to quantify the visible changes of the skin in colorimetric ways by introducing the methods devised in this study.
