초록/요약
Nowadays, most cellular phones are used beyond voice communication. Although the processing power of cellular phones is sufficient for most data applications, it is difficult to play video and audio contents in software because of their computational complexity and lack of basic tools for multimedia processing, and so software-based multimedia processing on cellular phones is a challenging issue. Several transcoding methods and performance optimization techniques are introduced to address this issue. However, as transcoding methods are mainly of the DCT-domain conversion, they are only applicable to high-end cellular phones that are equipped with a multimedia coprocessor. Also, most performance optimization techniques are based on parallel processing, and so they are restricted in special processors such as SIMD (Single Instruction Multiple Data) processors. Those two approaches alleviate the performance overhead compared with conventional processing method, but it is still difficult to play multimedia data on low-end cellular phones by software. In order to develop a solution for low-end and mid-tier cellular phones, this dissertation starts from analyzing the complexity of existing video standards to see if it is possible to play them on cellular phones by software. Many coding algorithms that are parts of video coding are classified into sub-algorithm groups and are studied in terms of computational complexity and compression ratio. With the analysis results, the overall performance of various coding profiles as combinations of sub-algorithms is evaluated. Finally, this dissertation selects a profile that adapts its complexity to the processing power of cellular phones. Also, this dissertation proposes an efficient dithering algorithm called out-of-order dithering as a post-video processing. The conventional post-video processing requires the processing power as much as video decoding requires, and so it degrades the frame rate by half. Out-of-order d
