Gravity-based cross-sectional evidence indicates that regional trade agreements arguably stimulate trade; cross-sectional evidence indicates that trade stimulate output. This study estimates the direct effect that RTAs have on productivity, given the above two arguments. We use economic and geographic data for 80 countries from 1983 through 2000 to quantify the implications of RTAs for productivity, employing ordinary least-squares and instrumental variables respectively. Our estimates suggest that RTAs raises productivity significantly. Our results support the hypothesis that the beneficial effects of RTAs on economic performance come through expected but unrealized increase of competition as well as through the promotion of trade.
