This study evaluated the relation between local vibration exposure by vibration tools and work-related musculoskeletal symptoms by investigating the vibration levels of various vibration tools used in the automobile assembly processing. The following results were obtained: 1. As the general characteristics of the subjects, both the vibration exposure group and the control group showed no the statistically significant difference in the average age and work duration. The average daily operating time of vibration tools was 75.6 minutes, and the vibration level was 4.2 m/s2, for the vibration exposure group. 2. There was no statistically significant difference of the vibration levels among the various shapes and types of vibration tools, nor among any other variables. 3. The distribution of musculoskeletal subjective symptoms revealed a statistically significant difference between the vibration exposure and control groups for the neck (p<0.05) and shoulder (p<0.01). The vibration exposure group showed a significantly higher level of symptoms than the control group in the neck and shoulder. 4. The relevant variables affecting musculoskeletal symptoms of the vibration exposure and control groups could be associated with the parts of the upper limbs. In the case of neck, physical-fatigue (OR, 2.556; 95% CI, 1.232~5.305) showed statistical significance. In the case of shoulder, vibrating tools’use (OR, 3.024; 95% CI, 1.436~6.367), worker’s age (OR, 2.257; 95% CI, 1.199-4.247), and physical-fatigue (OR, 2.054; 95% CI, 1.079~3.877) showed statistical significance of the relation with musculoskeletal symptoms. 5. As for the vibration exposure group, the symptoms group showed significantly higher level of physical-fatigue (p<0.01) than the symptoms free group in the case of neck. In the workers over 31 years old, physical-fatigue (p<0.01) showed statistical significance in the shoulder. Spirit-fatigue (p<0.05) showed a statistically significant difference between both groups for the arms. Spirit-fatigue (p<0.05) and physical-fatigue (p<0.01) showed the statistical significance for the hand. 6. The relevant variables affecting musculoskeletal symptoms of vibrating exposure group could be assorted by the parts of upper limbs. In the case of neck, vibrating tools’weight (OR, 2.451; 95% CI, 1.036~5.799), and physical-fatigue (OR, 4.247; 95% CI, 1.640~10.995) showed statistical significance. In the case of shoulder, worker󰡑s age (OR, 4.652; 95% CI, 1.892~11.437), physical-fatigue (OR, 3.925; 95% CI, 1.657~9.298), and the average daily operating time of vibrating tools (OR, 2.525; 95% CI, 1.075~5.931) showed a statistically significant relationship with the musculoskeletal symptoms. The above results showed that the vibration exposure level generated by the usage of vibrating tools had no relationship with either the type or the performance of the vibrating tools, but that it was affected rather by the external factors such as operating characteristics. In addition, the vibration exposure group who used the vibrating tools showed a higher percentage of subjective musculoskeletal symptoms. The relevant variables were age, work-related factors, and subjective labor strength. Therefore, it is recommended that a scheme to reduce the work-related load, such as the dispersion of the labor strength, should be examined and brought up.
