초록/요약

Background: Body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and waist-to- hip ratio (WHR) have long been used for obesity screening. Abdominal obesity represented by visceral fat area (VFA) is most accurately measured using computed tomography. However it is not practical in the clinic setting. Objective: The aim of the present study was to exam the relations between BMI, WC, WHR, VFA, visceral fat to skeletal muscle ratio (VMR) and percentage body fat (PBF) and to develop simple calculation method for estimating VFA using BMI and WC in Korean adults. Methods: Subjects were 525 adult participants in the Korean Sarcopenic Obesity Study (KSOS), an ongoing epidemiologic study supported by Korea Science and Engineering Foundation (KOSEF). BMI, WC, WHR, VMR, PBF were compared with VFA in a sample of 197 men and 328 women in Korean population. VFA were categorized into quintile groupings and means of BMI, WC, WHR and PBF were evaluated according to quintiles of VFA. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to estimate VFA. Results: BMI, WC, WHR, VFA, VMR and PBF were significantly correlated each other in all sex-age groups. VFA and VMR tended to increase with age in both sexes. Percentile values of BMI, WC, VMR and VFA are shown that corresponded to percentiles of PBF increments of 5 percentage points. Multiple regression analysis showed VFA = 1.296*Age + 6.029*BMI + 3.336*WC ? 376.230 (r2=0.510, p<0.01) in men, VFA = 1.490*Age + 4.282*BMI + 0.992*WC ? 251.586 (r2=0.661, p<0.01) in women. Conclusions: We calculated estimated equation of VFA using age, BMI and WC in Korean men and women. The regression equation showed relatively high correlation and good estimation.
